Men's health: Almost every second medication is a cardiovascular preparation

According to health experts, the risk of heart disease can be greatly reduced by eating well and getting enough exercise. Nevertheless, millions of Germans regularly swallow cardiovascular drugs. Especially men. Approximately every second preparation they take is for the pump.

Clear gender differences

Research has shown that there are clear gender differences in heart disease. This is also clear in the health report of the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) 2018. This shows that men take significantly more cardiovascular drugs than women.

Number one risk of disease

As the TK writes in a statement, lifestyle-related diseases such as high blood pressure and heart attack are the number one risk of disease for men.

The medicinal volume of cardiovascular preparations has doubled from 2000 to 2017 according to the current TK health report for men of working age.

These drugs now make up almost half of their total drug volume. On average, every working man received 115 daily doses of cardiovascular medication in the past year, women “only” 61.

Many heart diseases can be avoided

"We have been observing this trend in our annual health reports for years," said Wiebke Arps, health expert at TK.

“A large part of the heart diseases can be avoided. The most important factor here is a healthy lifestyle. This includes sufficient exercise, a healthy diet, no nicotine and relaxation, ”says Arps.

But that is often easier said than done. According to the TK movement study 2016, people in Germany spend an average of 6.5 hours sitting down every day, more than one in five even manages nine hours or more.

And then in the evening after work after sports? This is too exhausting for many. And most of them don't take the time to prepare balanced meals.

In the 2017 TK nutritional study, more than half of the respondents stated that they had no time and rest for a healthy diet.

Put an end to unusual habits

But how can you overcome the lack of exercise in yourself and eat a more balanced diet?

"Sometimes your own drive is not enough to put an end to unloved habits," said Arps.

"A healthy environment can make a significant contribution to ensuring that each individual pays more attention to their health."

The health insurance company is therefore campaigning for healthy living environments, "from nutrition projects in daycare to professional occupational health management."

In addition, everyone can do something for themselves. The health fund supports this with a free online offer, which includes information on the subjects of nutrition, fitness and relaxation. (ad)
